It's still perfect for your most valuable items that you want to store more securely than in a tray or drawer. The drawer on the bottom opens when you open the lid. It's all linked together. There is key and lock works with a 1/4 turn in any direction. It clicks into place at each quarter turn. Obviously more useful to lock while moving it around or travel so it doesn't spill open.
